Alkaline Metals | Science

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post this week for science we did an experiment on Alkaline Metals. For the experiment, we mixed water with some alkaline metals so that we could observe how the metals reacted to the water.

What is an Alkaline Metal?

An alkaline metal is very reactive and explosive when mixed with water. There are a total of 6 alkali metals and are found on the last left column of the periodic table. 

What reaction did we do yesterday?

Yesterday we used Lithium and Sodium to observe how they reacted to the warm water. A chemical reaction that was used for this was Sodium + Water 🠂 Sodium oxide + Hydrogen. 

(2Na + H2O 🠂 Na20 + H2)

Observations: Why did the metal react this way?

When the metal (Sodium) was put inside the water the metal lit on fire, the fire wasn't big. The metal lit on fire because of how much the sodium was attracted to the oxygen, seeing that the chemical name for water is H20. When the Sodium was reacting with the oxygen it was leaving behind hydrogen gas that created the explosion. 

Why do these metal react this way?

It only has 1 electron which is why it is highly reactive.

The was very interesting in terms of deep-sea creatures, it really captured readers with the striking photo and title of the article. The whole topic of a deep-sea creature washing up on the beach was really shocking and I wanted to find out more about it.

  - Yes it is, this can happen to anyone so the text is fair.  

How are children, teenager or young adults constructed in the text?
   - In the video young adults are portrayed as people who often go out to parties and drink lots of alcohol.

   - They are also portrayed as people prone to accidents and making mistakes.

How does the text present age, gender or cultural groups?
   - Males are more alcoholic and they stare at women.

   - There is a certain ethnicity that is stereotyped as people who always drink and is considered to be unintelligent.

Why is the text written this way? 
   - Don't drive, when you have drunk some alcohol.

The text represents how the world was before it modernized and shaped into what it is right now. It shows how people lived and the constant dangers they lived in to survive in that kind of environment. This also shows how much they did to be able to live in their environment.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, this term for social studies we have started a new topic that is called 'Trashing the World'. In this topic, we are learning about the importance of the oceans, what we are doing to help sustain the oceans and what is happening in the ocean that damages it. Our first task was to create a slideshow, informing readers about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and what we are doing to help clean up the oceans.

 -  This would likely be for adults and parents showing an example of what could happen to their children.
