Hi everyone! Welcome to another post. For sustainability, we have been working on a sustainability report for our school reports. In our sustainability report, we had to write about a topic in sustainability. We had to include an introduction, 3 paragraphs about that particular topic of sustainability and a conclusion to wrap it up. I chose to do a report on marine life, some problems with it and the way we can solve it.
Marine Life
Through the years our ocean have been enduring many years of pollution, acidification and a great big patch of rubbish that has assembled in the Pacific ocean. This had greatly affected our Earth's ecosystems, the climate and our lifestyles. But because we some people don't know what they are doing it means that they don't know how they can fix the problems. So in this writing, we will talk about some problems affecting the health of the ocean.
Coral reefs are an important underwater ecosystem, they provide many marine animals shelter and they protect many coastlines from strong waves that damage the inhabitants living there. Coral reefs also provide countries such as Australia a strong economy, provide fishing industries with fish, and provide tourism for countries. But when doing these activities it affects the health of the coral reefs. as mentioned Before, fishing industries can damage coral reefs if they overfish and sometimes there nets get caught in the coral and drag it, which is a very serious problem that needs to be solved. One of the most damaging activities is coral bleaching, which happens when corals reef animals release zooxanthellae which occurs due to the heat if the ocean. To sum this up coral reefs are very important ecosystems that we need to sustain to be able to live and survive.
Plastics from our moderns society such as plastic bags, plastic straws, bottles, toys, and wrappers. All of these debris has accumulated over the years and as a result of these rubbish being accumulated a great big patch has appeared between California and Hawaii. It has been estimated that 1.8 trillions bits of plastic are in the ocean, which is up to sixteen times higher than the last report in 2018. Any trash can get into the ocean and the most common one is plastic. Rubbish ends up in the water when they are left out and when you leave it out it'll end up in canals where it would be led into the open ocean. Sometimes people even throw their rubbish directly into the ocean, which is a tremendous problem for the ocean. As a result of that plastics cause a huge threat to animals, including sea animals and marine birds. Plastic is a threat because animals will sometimes mistake these bits of plastic as food and it damages their health and if they keep eating plastics it will cause them suffocations, starvation, or even drowning. Which is terrible for the existence of their species.
There are many ways to solve these problems but everyone will need to commit to the job and have the motivation to solve these problems. One effective way is to decrease the number of greenhouse gases we release and think about reducing our carbon footprint. Using less energy also has a positive impact on the ocean as it is reducing the number of greenhouse gases and CO2 we are releasing. This can help the environment especially the oceans and corals reefs because it means that the ocean will hopefully return to its original temperature and will also reduce the number of zooxanthellae being released. Another way is reducing out plastic use and picking up stray rubbish we see floating around. This can reduce the amount of rubbish that goes into the ocean and in cities. An example of this act is carrying a reusable bottle and recycling used things as often as possible. As I said before if we worked together and commit to the job we should be able to help our ocean grow healthier creating a good environment for all of us to live in.
As a result of this, we now know some problems that damage the ocean and some ways we can solve them and help out our oceans. So by doing all these we should be able to help our oceans be a better place for marine life to live in.
