Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 3 - Activity 3

Hello, this is the 3rd post of the day and I am actually trying to achieve 5. So anyway try to learn something and enjoy!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 3: TAKING ACTION

Activity 3: The Power of Ten [10 points]
Sir David Attenborough is a famous TV presenter from England who loves nature and the natural world. He has spent his career filming documentaries about the planet and working hard to protect it. In a recent interview, Sir David was asked to reflect on all that he had learned and to imagine that he had suddenly been given the power to save 10 animals and/or plants from extinction (disappearing forever).
After thinking about the question, he listed these 10 species (animals/plants):

1. Black Lion Tamarin (pictured to the right)

Let’s imagine that you had the same power and that you could save 10 species (animals or plants) from extinction. Who would you save? If I had the choice I would probably save animals like the elephant, white tiger and rhinoceros because they are unique and have lived for centuries on earth. I would also like to save some of my favourite flowers including hydrangeas and calla lily flowers. What about you?

Left to right: White tiger, Hydrangeas, Calla Lily
On your blog, list 10 species (animals or plants) that you would protect from extinction. For each one, give a reason as to why you think it is important to protect.

  1. Rafflesia Flower/Rafflesia Arnoldii  - One of the rarest flowers, with only 20 Rafflesia species in the world. The Rafflesia Flower is critically endangered.
  2. Saola - Saolas is critically endangered and the population is decreasing, though the population is unknown.
  3. Tigers - They are being hunted down for their distinctive fur, there are only 3,890 tigers in the world.
  4. Amur Leopard - They are critically endangered making them the most endangered cats. There are more than 84 individuals left.
  5. Javan Rhino - Javan Rhino's are critically endangered and there are only 50-68 Javan Rhinos left.
  6. Red Wolf - The Red Wolf is critically endangered, there are now only 25 - 40 species left in the world.
  7. Vaquita - Vaquita is the worlds most rare marine mammal. Vaquita is in the brink of extinction, there are only 30 individuals left.
  8. Asian Elephant - It may be endangered but it isn't critical, there are only less than 50,000 Asian Elephants left.
  9. Sumatran Rhino - Sumatran Rhinos are critically endangered, there are only 80 Sumatran Rhinos in the world.
  10. Sea turtle - Sea Turtles are critically endangered due to human activities and we need to save them. There are only 7 species of Sea Turtles left.  Though we don't know how many are still left.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 3 - Activity 2

Hello and welcome to another post. I haven't really been posting lately, but today my goal is to post more than 4 posts. Anyways please learn something and enjoy!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 3: Taking Action

Activity 2: Protecting the Most Vulnerable - Fact or Fiction? [4 points]
Here in New Zealand, we have a native dolphin, the Māui Dolphin, that is on the verge of extinction (disappearing forever). As of this year, there are only 63 Māui dolphins left and people predict that they will be extinct by 2033. Environmentalists and activists, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), are working hard to save the dolphin because it is such a special and unique animal. To learn more about the Māui Dolphin, please follow this link. If you would like to sign a petition from the WWF encouraging the New Zealand government to take action to save the Maui Dolphin, please follow this link.
Once you have learned more about this unique dolphin, it is time for you to share your learning with us.
On your blog, post three facts that you learned about the Māui Dolphin. Then, using your imagination, create three more statements about Māui dolphins that are not true (i.e. false). Please don’t tell us which of your statements about Māui Dolphins are true and which are false. It will be the job of the students and staff who read your blog to figure it out.
  1. Māui Dolphins can live up to 20 years.
  2. Māui Dolphins need to be protected from sharks, pollution, trawling and set netting.
  3. The Māui Dolphins biggest threat fishing.
  4. Plastic has sent Maui to the brink of extinction.
  5. Māui Dolphins have the same fin as a common dolphin.
  6. Māui Dolphins can see with sound.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 3 - Activity 1

Hello and welcome back to another post about the Summer Learning Journey we have 14 more days until it ends I was sad because I don't get to do any more fun stuff. But anyways please enjoy and learn something!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 3: Taking Action

Activity 1: Predator Free 2050 – A Call to Arms [4 points]

There is currently a huge drive to get rid of all predators from New Zealand. Predators are animals that, in some way, damage our natural environment. Many organisations are working hard to accomplish this goal.

Click on the links below to watch videos about three of the current projects operating to make New Zealand ‘Predator Free by 2050.’
Predator Free Video #1: Cacophony Project
Predator Free Video #2: Taranaki Mounga Project
Predator Free Video #3: Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP)
On your blog, tell us which one of the videos you liked the best and why.
The one I liked was the second one, which is the 'Taranaki Mounga Project', I liked it because it teaches many things about protecting the endangered animals and flourishing other endangered animals.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 2 - Activity 3

Hello and welcome again to another day, please learn something and enjoy!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 2: Protecting Our Own

Activity 3: A House is Not a Home [10 points]
New Zealand is home to some unique wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. While we work very hard to protect our natural habitats so, too, do people living and working in other countries. One of the oldest international wildlife conservation organisations is called ‘Fauna & Flora International’ (FFI). They support a number of projects around the world, including those working to protect Lansana trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, and national reserves in Mozambique. Read about each of these projects and choose the one that interests you the most.
On your blog, tell us which project you find most interesting and why...

I choose 'Protecting Cambodia's Coastal and Marine environments', I chose it because when I want to be a Marine Biologist when I grow up but I also want to protect many unique species of plants and animals. I also learned many things about Cambodia's coastal and marine environments. Here are some cool facts:
  • FFI has been working on marine conservation in Cambodia since 2010.
  • Koh Sdach Archipelago has been protected by the FFI and is still protecting till now. This site boasts impressive coral reefs and has been identified as a national hotspot for sea turtles, but it is suffering from the effects of overfishing and illegal fishing.
  • A seahorse hotspot has been identified around a small island in Koh Sdach Archipelago wit no fewer than six different species of seahorse. However, these charismatic animals are increasingly being targeted for use in traditional Asian medicine trade.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 2 - Activity 2

Hello again this will be quick, please enjoy your holidays to the fullest because school is starting soon. Anyways enjoy!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve
DAY 2: PROTECTING OUR OWN
Activity 2: A Protective Plant [4 points]
There are concerns about the water quality of some of the rivers, streams and oceans in and around New Zealand. Some people have suggested that we plant flowers and plants on the banks of our most polluted rivers to stop the spread of the pollution. Apparently, the plants can act as filters, absorbing some of the chemicals (pollutants) that are moving across the land, on their way to the river.
Planting can be a lot of fun! Have you ever planted a garden? Aronui and I are going to make our very own edible garden this year. We are going to plant a number of veggies, fruits and herbs, including mint, coriander, parsley, lemongrass, onions, tomatoes, beans, zucchinis, kumara and strawberries. Yum! If you could plant an edible garden what would you plant in it?

On your blog list 10 veggies, fruits, or herbs that you would plant in your garden.

  1. Lemon
  2. Apricot
  3. Celery
  4. Brussel Sprouts
  5. Cherries
  6. Strawberries
  7. Carrots
  8. Spinach
  9. Potatoes
  10. Cilantro (Herb)

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 2 - Activity 1

Hello and welcome to again 2019, on January the first my family were supposed to go Cherry Picking, but it was closed so we went home and created a Korean themed dinner. Well anyways please enjoy and learn something!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 2: Protecting Our Own

Activity 1: A Flying Fox [4 points]

New Zealand has some of the most beautiful forests in the world. Both New Zealanders and tourists, alike, enjoy walking through these forests. Unfortunately, constantly walking through forests can damage the plants and animals (flora and fauna) that live there. In an attempt to protect the local flora and fauna, an eco-tourism company in Rotorua came up with an idea. The Rotorua Canopy Tours Company designed a series of zip lines that sit above the forest canopy (top). People can ‘zip’ from one section of the forest to another, looking down on the beautiful natural areas below. To see what zip lining looks like, check out this video.
I have tried ziplining and I really enjoyed it, however, I must admit that I was pretty scared to try it at first. How would you feel if you had the chance to go ziplining in Rotorua?
On your blog, tell us how you would feel about going ziplining in Rotorua. Try to use some descriptive words (adjectives) and action words (verbs) in your post!.
To be honest I have never tried zip lining because my family would think that it would be dangerous I kinda agree with them because there might be a malfunction. But I also would like to zip line, I mean Rotorua is a beautiful place, you can see aesthetic landmarks.

But if I was to imagine what it would feel like I am sure it would be the best thing to do, you would be able to the wind and I think It would feel like your flying. I would really love to zip line in Rotorua, just by looking at the picture make me feel jealous by the people doing it. Other than that I would really be honoured zip lining in Rotorua.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4l Day 1 - Activity 3

Hello amazing people, welcome to the 2nd day of the New Year. I am still very excited, because of the new year but also with school. So let's cut this short and start!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 1: Preserving the Past

Activity 3: The Sky in Shanghai [10 points]

One day I would really like to travel to China. It is a country with a rich history, vibrant cities, tasty food, and fascinating architecture   (buildings). Unfortunately, some of the largest Chinese cities have high rates of air pollution. The air pollution in Beijing, one of the largest cities in China, can get so bad that roads are closed, flights are cancelled and events are postponed while they wait for the smog in the air to clear. The terrible pollution is also having fatal (deadly) effects as, approximately, 1.1 million people in China died last year from air pollution-related causes. The Chinese government is very concerned and they have introduced a number of strategies (ideas) to reduce the pollution levels. Imagine that you were asked to travel to Beijing. How would you feel?

On your blog, write a poem that describes your feelings about travelling to Beijing, China.

As big as the universe,
With the pollution, the air gets worse,
Though it still remains,
It still is a beautiful place,
Embraced with grace.
The surroundings are replaced by charming faces,
Looking through the cities you will see a tall building in different kinds of shapes,
Soon it will escape and it will be a great place.

Hey! I don't think I did really well with the poem because it is quite hard to rhyme things. I really tried my best, anyways if I did any wrong things please down below!
