SLJ 2020-2021: Fishy False Teeth

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today I will be doing another post for the Summer Learning Journey. For this activity, we needed to create a comic for a video which was attached to the activity board. But before that, we had to read an article to learn more about the video, which was called Fishy False Teeth. The video was about two people fishing in the middle of the lake and a series of funny events happen. After doing that we had the choice to choose what website to use to make our template. I chose to do the template on the slide.

SLJ 2020-2021: Your Comments Count

 Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today I will be doing an activity for the Summer Learning Journey. For this activity, we had to do a quality comment on a student's blog and then post it on our blog. I decided to comment on a blog from Waikowhai Primary School in the Ako Hiko Cluster. After commenting we had to describe why our comment is a quality comment.

The chorus was written very well and I especially liked it when you mentioned the subject of standing tall, I found it very motivating. Summer Learning Journey 2020 - 2021 : Starter Activity

Health : Discovery - Schizophrenia

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post. For the past few weeks in health, we were working on our discovery topics where we get to research a topic of mental health and then do research about that kind of topic. Firstly we had to choose some big questions to answer that relates to our topic of mental health, then we had to research some information to answer the big questions we have chosen. The answers that we wrote had to be well thought out and the information has to include some key concepts we learned about this year. After that, we did some more research about some strategies to cope or cure that specific topic of mental health. While researching about it we also had to think about how we are going to present our work. Finally, after finishing all that work we had to post our research with our choice of presentation for our work. 

For this project, I decided to work in pairs, so I working with someone else. We decided to do our research on schizophrenia. Like the process above, we all did the same and things and wrote about schizophrenia. From there we then had to choose our choice of presentation, in other words, we needed to pick how to present the information we have gathered.

The Black Death - Fleas and Rats

 Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today we are learned about how fleas and rats affected the black death during the middle ages. During the lesson, we learned about what fleas and rats carry around and how they infected the human with black death. After learning about fleas and rats we then did a task to learn more about rats and fleas. We did that by sorting out some characteristics of a rat and flea, then we made a diagram on how the disease was spread. Then we made a basic body paragraph about the fleas and rats during the black death.

Two of the most common types are the black rat and brown rat.

Can feed on almost anything edible. 


Tend to stay near people.


Poison, gas and traps are ways of killing them.

Basic Body Paragraph:

During the black death fleas and rats had a tremendous part in the cause of the black death. Rats were commonly seen during the Middle Ages, whether it be on the trading ships, homes, churches, farms and castles, they would often be seen there. Fleas and rats are dirty creatures and they come from gnarly places were filthy objects accumulated and these were seen everywhere. Because during the Middle Ages the environment was not clean, there were a lot of places that were full of people and people had very little knowledge about hygiene. The black death started when fleas suck the infected blood of the rat, after that, it would then jump to a human and it would vomit the infected blood on their host’s body, which would then start the domino effect of the black death. Because places were crowded the black death was spread in a few years of time. The black death was also spread because of the trading ships and cargo being shipped across the continent and these cargo/ships also had rats in it that had fleas inhabiting their body. Concluding my past statements rats and fleas were very dangerous beings during the black death and they were something that can cause a downfall of a nation.

Art : Photography

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post. For the past weeks in art, we have been learning about photography, we looked at different photographs taken by famous photographers, we even took some photos ourselves. After that, we then got to learn how to use photoshop and how to apply some different styles to our photo using photoshop.

Slinkachu
For the first few weeks, we were learning about Slinkachu. Slinkachu is an artist from the UK who creates his own mini figurines and then creates a little plot for the figurines, he then leaves the figurines behind. His work embodies the elements of street art, sculpture, installation art, and photography. So by using him as an inspiration, we took some photos using small figurines and some objects to create a scene with the figurines.

For each of our photographs, we thought of a theme to go along with that a specific photo. For example, my partner and I thought that we should take some photos that represent the theme "Crime Scene". Where either one of the figurines would be hurt, dead or were surrounded by soldiers. Another theme that we did was "Another Self" where we used identical figurines and used a platform to make them face each other.

One of my favourite photographs were when we used blu-tack to stick to the figurine because we were supposed to hide the blue tack we thought that it was pretty hard since the figurines were small. So we thought "Why not use the blu-tack to model with the figurine?" So we came out with this outcome:

After taking some photos we then used the photos and created some thumbnail drawings with it. In the drawing, we highlighted the focal point and the leading lines of the photo, we also labelled the picture if it was symmetrical or not. 


Photoshop & Overlay or Collage 
For this topic, we also used the photos we took from the previous topic and use photoshop to apply overlay and collage techniques to edit the photos. We also learned some new skills from using photoshop and applied these skills to editing our photos. Some of the artists I covered when applying these skills were Chad Wys, Aliki Braine, and Randy Grskovic.

Reflection: In my opinion, I did well in this topic because I work hard to complete the work that was set and I think that the photos we took were pretty cool.

Canterbury Museum : EOTC Activities

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for Wānanga we were assigned to do tasks where we complete activities about the locations where we go out for EOTC week. We had to choose at least one activity from each location and the one I did today is from the Christchurch City Centre. For that activity, we had to write a paragraph about a topic on the site that read and answer a question. 

On the online Museum Module, many different topics were being exhibited ranging from the World War from Ancient New Zealand Animals. The passage was called Ancient New Zealand: Squawkzilla and the Giants. On the page, there were another two passages one about research on Waipara dating back 62 million years ago and another research on St Bathans which dates back 20 million years ago. I chose to read about the research on Waipara. What I found interesting in this passage was the amount of ancient penguin and bird fossils found on the Waipara Fossil Sites. The animals I found intriguing was a giant sea turtle because of its size and their specific kinds of species. 








Performance Evaluation : Music

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, this Friday is our final day of music classes, so this means that we get to perform the pieces that we are learning in our previous classes. After those performances, we had to do a blog evaluation on how we felt with learning music this year and how we felt with our performances. 

① : What have you enjoyed in music this year?
I have enjoyed learning new instruments and I also liked performing.

② : What have you found challenging about music this year?
I found it hard to learn a piece because of the little amount of time we had. 

③ : What did you perform for your final assessment? Who did you perform with? Why did you choose that piece?
I performed a piano piece called Clair De Lune by myself and I chose that piece because it was a song that I have been trying to learn for a few weeks. 

④ : How did you find performing?
I think it was quite fun and it was very enjoyable. 

⑤ : Were you happy with your performance?
Yes, I was happy with my performance, even though I misplaced some notes I think I did satisfactorily. 

⑥ : Any other comments about music 2020?
Music 2020 was entertaining, and I got to learn a lot of useful information, but it was sad that we didn't get more time to polish performance pieces.

The Black Death in History

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post today in hurumanu 3 we are starting our main topic for the hurumanu which is the Black Death. Our first activity was to learn about the keywords that we would use while learning about the black death. After that, we looked at more information about life at that time and what time period it was. Afterwards, we then had to create a timeline about where the black death fits in history, and on the timeline, we had to include Coronavirus.

Distillation : Hurumanu 3

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for science we are learning about Distillation by doing an experiment about it. While learning about it we needed to know about two important things to follow along with the experiment. The two things were Evaporation and Condensation, which were some topics that we did an experiment on, in earlier weeks.

Evaporation: This happens when you heat a liquid into a particular temperature and that liquid turns into a gas. 
Condensation: This happens when a gas cools down and turns into a liquid. 
Distillation: This is a scientific experiment use to show the process of condensation. 

Aim: To separate a solute from a solver in a solution using distillation. 
Hypothesis: When the coke evaporates I think that it will heat and leave behind some sugar. While the coke zero would also leave behind some sugar but not a lot. 
Equipment: Conical Flask, Heatproof Mat, Gauze Mat, Delivery Tube and Bung, Bunsen Burner, Retort Stand, Boss Head and Clamp, Boiling Tube, Coke. 

*For this experiment we used coke rather than saltwater.*

Method:
1. Set up equipment shown in the diagram. 
2. Add 50ml Coke into the conical flask. 
3. Light the Bunsen Burner and put under the tripod.
4. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has evaporated.

Observation
When the soda was boiling it was evaporating and condensing at the same time. When the evaporated gas goes up to the delivery tube and down to the tube it then condenses. While all of this happens the cola has a lighter colour than it was in the start. To follow that statement the bubbles were always appearing near the sides of the flask and the soda was slowly evaporating. 

For the condensed liquid that has made its way to the tube, it is slowly being cooled down by the ice. The more time passes the more condensed liquid goes to the tube. Because the soda is being heated the liquid slowly evaporates and the liquid slowly separates from the sugar leaving the sugar behind in the conical flask. 

Conclusion:
In the end in my opinion my hypothesis was correct because both of the sodas have left behind sugars. For the original soda, it had a thick slurry of sugar left inside the flask. While the coke zero also had some left behind but not a lot. 

Discussion:
I think that these happened because if the amount of soda that was being heated up which caused the process of evaporation and condensation. Because of that the when the soda evaporates and turns into a gas it is then trapped by something to condense it making it travel inside the delivery tube and ending up in the tub. 

Evaluation
I really liked doing this experiment because it was very exciting to set up the material for the experiment. I also really enjoyed just watching as the soda boils and evaporate into the tube.

Evaporation Experiment

Hi everyone! Today in science we did an experiment on Evaporation. For this experiment, we burned some water and some Copper Sulfate. During the experiement we again used the words Solute, Solvent, and Solution to identify the process during this experiment. 

Solute: The liquid/Substance being dissolved.
Solvent: The liquid/Substance in which the solute dissolves. 
Solution: A mixture that form when one substance dissolves another.

Aim: To separate a solution into a solvent and solute using evaporation.
Hypothesis: I think that the water would evaporate and decrease while the copper sulfate will boil and lose its water molecules. 
Equipment: Copper Sulfate Solution, 250ml Beaker, Heatproof Mat, Evaporating Basin, Bunsen Burner. 

Method:
1. Set up Bunsen Burner, with the Tripod and the Gauze.
2. Fill a 250ml Beaker with 100ml of water and place on top of Gauze. 
3. Using a evaporating basin, add copper sulfate until it is a quarter full.
4. The carefully put the evaporating basin on top of the beaker.
5. Turn on the Bunsen Burner and watch for result. 

*Note: Do not touch any equipment after experiment or during experiment as the are hot.*

Observations
During the experiment when the water was boiling we saw a lot of condensing. Which is when a gas is changed to become a liquid. During that time, there was also a large amount of steam being released. While the water kept boiling we noticed that the water was slowly evporating and at the end we were left with almost no water. 

The copper sulfate was my favourite one to observed as it was getting slowly crystalized as the heat goes through the evaporating basin. At first it was only small crystals at the sides of the mixture and by the end the whole mixture looked dry as if it was glued onto the basin. 

Conclusion:
I think that half of my hypothethis is right because the water did evaporate and decrease and the Copper Sulfate looked dry. 

Discussion:
During the experiment there was a lot of condensing because the water was being boiled to the point where it evaporates making the gas condense and drop to the water. The steam was being released because the water was boiling and it was extremely hot. because the water was boiling it also decreases the amount of water because the water turned to gas which we know as steam. 

The Copper Sulfate got crystalized because it was originally a solid which was mixed into a liquid. So by boiling the water and letting the gas seap into the evaporating basin it made the Copper Sulfate lose its water molecules and leave it with a dry and crystalized form. 

Evaluation:
I enjoyed this experiement a lot because it was very fun to watch as the water slowly evaporates and how the Copper sulfate gradually crystalized. Next time I would really like to try it with a different mixture and see what happens to it.

Dilution Experiment

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post for science we did an experiment on dilution. During the experiment, we needed to know what kinds of things were happening so we learned about what Solution, Solute and Solvent meant. 

Solution: A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another. 
Solute: Substance being dissolved. 
Solvent: A substance in which the solute dissolves in. 

Concentration: A measurement of how much solute exists in a certain amount of solvent. 
Dilute: To make a liquid less concentrated; weaker. 

Experiment
Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate concentration.

Hypothesis: I think that over time the colour of the solution should be lighter than the original colour.

Equipment:
- Potassium Permanganate
- Six large test tubes 
- Test tube rack
- Measuring Cylinder
- Pipette 

Method:
1. Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack and label them with numbers 1 - 6. 
2. Using the measuring cylinder, fill the first test tube with 10ml of water. Then fill the remaining test tubes with 5ml of water.
3. Using Tweezers or a Popsicle stick pick out chunks of Potassium Permanganate in the first test tube. Then mix. 
4. Then, using the pipette transfer approximately 5ml of the solution in the first test tube to the second test tube. 
5. Then repeat the same thing with the other test tubes. Transfer 5ml from the previous test tube to the next test tube.

Observation

When transferring the solution from the first test tube the solution looked lighter and when we kept transferring the solution from each test tube, from first to last we noticed that it was a lot lighter than the first test tube. 

Discussion
It was a fact that the first test-tube had the most concentration as it because it was of a darker colour than the rest of the solutions and we've also seen that the last test tube (test tube No. 6) was the least concentrated. Which can also mean that it was the most diluted out of all of the solutions. 

In my opinion, this happened because of how much the Potassium Permanganate was being transferred in low concentration liquids. So to conclude my statement this happened because the Potassium Permanganate was being transferred over and over again to diluted liquids which made it lose it's high concentration particles.

Gymnastics Reflection

 For the first 3 weeks of Term 4, we did a course about gymnastics where we learned how to do skills on equipment and how to do them properly. 

My focus is:
1. Routine on Trampoline 
2. Cartwheel on the mat
3. Balancing to the beam

The thing I like the most about this gymnastics course was learning how to do a forward roll on the beam. I think that learning about gymnastics was a really fun thing to do and I would like to learn more skills in gymnastics. One thing I didn't get to do properly during the 3 weeks was how to do a pullover on the bars. (A pullover aims to get your legs over the bar and your hips on top of the bar so that you land in front support.)



Filtration

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post today during science we did an experiment on filtration and some other topics about mixing and separating. The things we learned today were Solvent, Solute, Solution, Filtration,  Filtrate, Mixture and Solubility. We needed to know these key words for our experiment, so that we can understand what we are doing and what is happening to the mixture during filtration. 

Aim: Our aim was to separate a solution from a precipitate, which is the name of a solid that forms in a liquid during a chemical reaction. 

Equipment
- Sodium Carbonate
- Copper Sulfate
- Conical Flask 
- Stirring Rod
- 200ml Beaker
- Funnel 
- Filter Paper

Method:
  1. Pour 50ml of Copper Sulfate into the beaker. 
  2. Add the same measurement of Sodium Cabornate solution. 
  3. Fold the filter paper so that it can fit inside the funnel. 
  4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside the conical flask. 
  5. Stir the mixture that was in the beaker and then carefully pours in the funnel. 
Observation

When the Copper Sulfate (blue transparent liquid) and the Sodium Carbonate (transparent liquid) were 2 mixed it had a chemical reaction. The mixture was more opaque and it was no longer transparent, it looked like the colour cyan. 

When we poured the mixture into the funnel with the filter paper and it filtrated the solution it came out with a clear solution similar to water (but it isn't water). The solution looked more chunky and looked as if it had something in it. 

Discussion
I think the solution came out as a clear colour because of the chemical reaction where we mixed the Copper Sulfate and the Sodium Carbonate. As I said in my observation it looked like it had chunks in it and I thought that maybe it was the cause of the outcome of the filtration. To follow with that statement because there were solids in the mixture it got caught in the filtration paper and then the liquid was then filtrated out to the conical flask.

Tokelauan - Niuean Language Week

 Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, this week is Tokelau + Niue language week. So to celebrate it, we were allocated some tasks to learn more about their language and celebrate their language in NZ. We had the choice of what tasks we should do. I decided that I would do a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about some common phrases in Tokelauan and Niuean.
