Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today I will be doing another activity for the Summer Learning Journey. Enjoy!
Activity 2: OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was an English scientist who was interested in studying the origin (beginning) of the universe. When he was just 21 years old, he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and, over time, he lost the ability to walk and talk. He needed to use a wheelchair to move around and a computer to help him talk. The computer made his voice sound a bit funny but, most importantly, it meant he could still communicate with people.
Despite his diagnosis, Stephen Hawking lived a long and very productive life. He showed great determination and perseverance because he didn't let his physical challenges stop him. He didn't quit. Instead, he 'overcame the odds' and achieved a huge amount in his life.
For this activity, we had to recount a time when we or someone we know experienced a challenge and overcame it.
This happened last year in the A&P show, my sister and I was really excited about riding the rides and eating food. But when we rode on a particular ride my sister was terrified. It was the ride where you go up, down and turn around in circles. She said it was really scary because we were so high up and she was scared that we might fly off. To solve this problem my sister and I created a little song to cheer her up and distract her for when we go up and down. After the ride finished she said she really enjoyed and I was really proud of her for facing her fear.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
