Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, for this activity we learned about Sir Edmund Hillary and how he made history with his journey to the top of Mt Everest.
Activity 3: Scaling New Heights
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa (guide), Tenzing Norgay, were the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest, that tallest mountain in the world.
At the time, Edmund Hillary was apiarist (beekeeper) from Auckland, New Zealand. During the summer he worked as a beekeeper, and during the winter, he climbed mountains. Becoming the first person to summit Everest was not easy. In fact, Edmund Hillary attempted (tried) to climb to the top of Mt Everest three times before he succeeded. He was determined to reach the top!
While this famous explorer and climber is mostly remembered for being the first person to reach the summit of Mt Everest, he has also made a huge impact on the world through his charity work. In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary set up the Himalayan Trust to bring education, healthcare and safe drinking water to the people of Nepal - the country where Mt Everest is located.
For this activity, we had to select a charity that we are interested in and then we had to write a short explanation of what the charity does.
I have chosen the OXFAM charity.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-2020 • Week 1 • Day 1 - Activity 2
Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, this is another activity for the Summer Learning Journey, but this time we are learning about Aotearoa and who discovered it. I hope you enjoy reading my post.
Activity 2: Discovering Aotearoa [4 points]
Many people believe that Kupe was the first explorer to discover Aotearoa, New Zealand in about 1300. He navigated his way by waka to Aotearoa from Hawaiki using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques - just like Nainoa Thompson (from Activity 1) did much later on. Legend says that he followed a great octopus all the way to Aotearoa/New Zealand and finally destroyed it in Cook Strait (the water between the North and South Islands).
Many years later, a Dutch explorer from The Netherlands, Abel Tasman, was exploring the Pacific Ocean when he came across New Zealand. He thought that he was the first person to ‘discover’ the country (despite the fact that Māori already lived in New Zealand!) and made the claim in 1642 that he had ‘discovered’ a new land. His exploration of New Zealand inspired many other European explorers to follow his lead and travel to Oceania.
Kupe and Abel Tasman were two different men from two very different backgrounds (cultures) who shared a common interest - exploration.
For this activity, we had to think about our personal experiences and our cultural background. We had to explain where our family comes from. For this, I have created a poster about my cultural background. For this, I have created a poster about where my family and I came from.
I hope you have learned something, please have a great day!

Wind Power
Measuring weather.
Definitions:
- Anemometer:
- Beaufort wind scale:

MATERIALS
- 4 Dishes
- 2 Sticks
- Tape
- Pin
- Pencil
STEPS
- Grab all the materials.
- First Stick the 4 dishes to each side of the stick. Make sure the dishes are opposite sides.
- Secure with tape.
- Stick the middle of the sticks together, make sure it is secured tight.
- Stick a pin through the tape and into the top pencil. Make sure the tape isn't on the pencil so it could spin right.
- Experiment with the wind.
Groups size: 5
Roles:
Roles:
- Timekeeper
- Counter
- Recorder
- Anemometer Manager
- Wind Manager
- Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
- When the timekeeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
- Repeat the above step four (4) times and record the number of spins on the chart.
FINDINGS
- Record how many times it spins and record it in the table below.
- You will need to time them and count the number of spins.
| Place name on school grounds | Number of Spins in 15 seconds | |
| 1. | Field | 11 |
| 2. | Old J Block Site | 0 |
| 3. | Grass Hill Quad | 0 |
| 4. | Tennis Court Gate | 1 |
CONCLUSION:
The field was the windiest part of the school. It is because the field is more exposed. The old J block site and the grass hill quad didn't blow any wind when we were on it. The tennis court gate somehow got 1 we could've gotten two but the Anemometer was going one way then the other way. So, in conclusion, the field is the windiest part.
- USING A4 PAPER DRAW YOUR RESULTS ON A GRAPH.
- TAKE A PICTURE OF THE GRAPH AND UPLOAD IT TO YOUR BLOG
WHICH IS THE WINDEST AREA AND WHY? - The field is the windiest area because it is more open and isn't surrounded by a lot of trees.
WHICH IS THE CALMEST AREA AND WHY? - The calmest area is the tennis court gate because it was surrounded by trees.
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE ON LAND TO BUILD A WINDMILL? - In an open space where lots of wind would pass through.

SWIMMING!! Jump In!
Its finally Term 4, that means its swimming time. So we went to Canterbury Swim School to learn some swimming skill. We will be going there for 2 weeks, then after the two weeks we will be taking the lessons in our own school.
1:What,Where and Why
In Term 3, there was a notice that went home that we will swimming at the first day of the term, Monday 16 October. We went at 11:00 am, we boarded a bus, the bus was pretty big. On the way to the swim school, my friends and I were talking about being in the same group. In Canterbury Swim school, they put you in to groups with some instructors.
2:Taking a first look👀
When we arrive at our destination, we lined up outside. Inside we took of our shoes with the socks and went inside. After we changed we sat in the wet chairs, to listen to what the instructor was saying, and which groups we where in. I heard my name and went to my instructor. She was a girl, I didn't know her name but she was nice and polite.
3: Getting Into it
So we started by doing some kicking using a board. Then we moved on to doing some freestyle up to the end. It was pretty hard because I couldn't reach the bottom of the pool.
From the swimming I did for today, a few days from now my goal, would be to be able to swim 3 lengths of the big pool.
Reflective Comment: Well I can improve on becoming a great swimming, next time I should be a little bit more calmer.
Here you can see a video of me doing freestyle.

Bye Bye Term 3!
Now Term 3 has passed by, we have new upcoming term to come by. That's when we start swing its summer. So I am going to take you back to all the cool activities that we did this term including the whole school extravaganza. Are you ready? I hope you are because I am going to excite you.
1: Whole School Extravaganza
For term 3 we have been preparing for our school extravaganza, in week 6 term 3. The theme for our extravaganza, is nz past to future. Many classes did amazing things, we started by our school's choir, then down to the 1800's fashion style. The list goes on, there are also some cultural dances from the Pasifikan group to the Filipino dance group.
Here are some pictures of all of us practicing.
Now it is time for the real show to begin.
2:Computational Thinking
After the extrvaganza we were focused on doing computational thinking. Our teacher took a group, (including me) with her to learn about computational thinking.
Here are some pictures of our group working hard to learn about the wonders of computational thinking. This one was a secret to the other group.
Well I am sure we have all wrapped up term 3, I will all see you next term. Bye!

EOTC Week
Last week and this week we did EOTC week, EOTC week is education outside the class room. I was really excited. I feel scared but excited at the same time.
Surfing and Body Boarding,
On Thursday 8th December we went to Sumner beach to do some surfing and body boarding. We had to learn some safety rules before we go in the water. After that I had to change into our swimming togs and grab a wet suit that fits, then we got change into our togs and the wet suit and we went surfing and body boarding. For lunch we had fish and chips, Donuts and hot dog.
Adrenaline Forest and Spencer,
One Friday 9th December we went to Adrenaline Forest and Spencer park. We got split up to 2 groups my group was first to be climbing the tall trees. I got up to stage 3 it was really scary but also fun. It was also very challenging. Once we finished we had lunch in Spencer park which is just across the road. When we finished we played in the playground and the other group went to Adrenaline Forest. When they finished we went back to school.
Mega Air and Top Team,
On Tuesday 13th December we went to Mega Air and we did top team. First we watched a video with safety rule before we jump and after that we had lots of fun. Genica, Aiden, Kea and I did some flips and Handstands and then we went to the foam pit and the Air bag we had lots of fun in racing in the Air Bag. We were there for an hour. Then we had to walk back to school.
