Summer Learning Journey 2019 - 2020 · Week 1 · Day 1 - Activity 1

Hi everyone! Now that school has ended and the holidays are here, we don't get to do much learning anymore. So for that, we got introduced to the Summer Learning Journey, this stars from the 16th of December to 24th January 2020. The Summer Learning Journey (SLJ), is to do learning through the holidays so when we get back to school,

So now it is time for the first day, on this day we will be learning about Explorers:

DAY 1: EXPLORERS

Activity 1: Setting Sail [4 points]
People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swell to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.
Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!
I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.

For this activity, we have to make a list of ten foods that we could take on the adventure. But we do not have any access to a fridge or freezer. We also had to write the reasons why we chose that type of food.

1. Protein Bars/Muesli Bars - Granola Bars
・Because they are healthy and can last for a long time, they also come in small packs so it's easy to carry around.

2.Dried Fruits
・I personally like dried fruits because they can last for a long time and they taste delicious. Some examples of dried fruits are Raisins, Apricots, Banana/Banana Chips and Mango.

3.Watermelon seeds - In Tagalog we call it Butong Pakwan
・In the Philippines, I used to eat this a lot and they tasted very good. They are healthy snacks, though they are small they come and big packs so you end with a lot.

4. Cup Noodles/2 minutes noodles
・They are portable and you can carry them anywhere, but I don't think there would be a kettle.
- They are stored in big cups and can be heated up to make noodles.

5. Candy-Sweets
・They is delicious and it would be nice to have a little treat while on the trip.

6. Corn/Canned Corn

・Corn is one of my favourite foods and canned corn are easy to carry around and can be eaten for a long time.

7. Crackers and Biscuits
・It's easy to bring them around and they are delicious snacks.

8.Chips
・They are a common snack and they can last up to 2-3 months.

9.Nuts
・They are healthy and they can last for a long time. They also benefit your energy and can energize you.

10. Tea Bags
・I personally like tea and I think it would be good when the weather is a bit cold.

How many gorilla's?

Hello everyone! Welcome to another post today I am going to doing another activity for the Winter Learning Journey. So for this activity, we had to do some creative math. So if the answer was twenty-five gorillas what could the question be, we had to come up with three different ways we could find the answer.

Here are my solutions:

If you have any other solutions feel free to comment down below. I hope you learned something!

Ding, Dong, Ting, Tong.........

Hey everyone! Welcome to another post today I have a very exciting activity I have done for the Winter Learning Journey. So this is in this activity we had to use a Song Maker, and make a tune or melody that we could use to help retell our favourite story. We needed to record our melody while we read a page from our favourite book.

Well, I hope you enjoy!

The video may have a lot of mistakes, as my reading isn't very good due to me having English as a second language. Now you are probably wondering what book is reading well the book is called paperboy. I posted a book review about this yesterday and you can see it here. Well, I hope you really have enjoyed watching the video, please have a great day!

What is that!

Hello everyone! It is now the term holidays! Finally, school has ended for a few weeks, but I have decided I want to keep learning throughout the holiday so I am going to be doing the Winter Learning Journey. It is like the Summer Learning Journey except it is winter. Get it? Anyways, there is a range of activities we could do, we can also do it in any kind of order we want. There are a total of twenty activities. So let us get started.

I chose to do activity six, where we need to pick two animals and create a new animal by merging them together. I have chosen two animals and those animal are, The Asiatic Bear and The Cheetah.

What I did first was looking at both animals and decided which head I was going to draw. I chose the Asiatic Bear because I thought it would look cool. Then I figured out what I wanted to do with the body.

Here is the head:

Full Drawing:
Umm, don't mind the scrunches. Hehe
