Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 1 - Activity 1

Hello and welcome again to another post about the Summer Learning Journey! It is almost New Years, only 3 more hours and I am super excited . So this is now my 100th post for the year and I am super happy. Anyway enjoy and Have a Happy New Years Eve!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 1: Preserving the Past

Activity 1: World of Wearable (WOW) Art [4 points]

If we want to protect our natural world, we must be thoughtful about what we make, how we make it and how we dispose of it (throw it away). At the moment, the waste in New Zealand is separated into two main categories: 1. Recycled items (eg. bottles, cans, paper) and, 2. Non-recycled items (rubbish). Most of the rubbish is collected by rubbish trucks and taken to a rubbish tip (landfill) where it is dumped and never used again. Much of the recycled material is to take` to a place where it is sorted, separated and sent out to be used again.
The idea of reusing materials was taken to a whole new level by a woman named Dame Suzie Moncrieff who, thirty years ago, created an event in New Zealand called the ‘World of WearableArt’ (WOW). WOW takes place in Wellington (and in other cities) every year. Artists from around the world create outfits made entirely from recycled materials.
Let’s imagine that you were invited to this year’s WOW awards and you were able to interview the creator.
On your blog, list five interview questions that you would like to ask Dame Suzie Moncrieff.
  1. What inspired to do what you are doing?
  2. Which design would you say represents New Zealand the most?
  3. How do you make your designs?
  4. Why did you create the event 'WOW'?
  5. If you can design anything what concept would it be?

Happy New Years Eve!

Hello everyone, Happy New Years Eve there are 4 more hours till the new year and it is currently 7:58 and I am already excited. A few minutes ago my dad and sister just blew up a firework and it was so cool, it flared up in different kinds of colours. We also ate Korean food that we made our selves and it was delicious. I didn't get to take any pictures of the fire works because my phone was dead.

But here are some pictures:

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 5 - Activity 3

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away
DAY 5: Here to Stay

Activity 3: Let It Rain [10 points]
Over the past few decades, we have seen an increase in the amount of rain that falls here in New Zealand. We are lucky, however, that most of the rain that falls is regular rainwater and not polluted acid rain. Acid rain is rain that has bad chemicals (pollutants) in it. When acid rain hits the ground it can enter the water system, killing plants and animals. Click here to learn more about acid rain.

Let’s imagine that New Zealand was hit by a massive acid rain storm. Acidic rain fell for three days and three nights. When the rain fell, you stayed inside with your friends and family. When it stopped, however, you and your family decided to go for a walk outside. You opened the door and...

On your blog, write a short story about what happened when you opened the door and walked outside after the acid rain storm. To earn full points, you must write a story that is 8 – 10 sentences long.
Sitting down on my couch waiting for the acid rain to stop, just watching from the window gives me chills. A few seconds later it stops standing up from the uncomfortable couch I walked over to the window and opened it to see if there are any signs of the rain. Now knowing that it has stopped I walked to my front door and looked around. The plants were dead and half of the animal population were gone. I really hated to see our world like this, luckily we managed to save 10 of the endangered wildlife. I didn't want to take a step outside since we needed the acid rain to evaporate, it would take a week, so another week of playing boards games and reading. Too bad we didn't have internet because of the rain.

Finally, we were able to go outside. I opened the door and noticed how dead everything was my family wondered why too. We stepped outside and everything felt so different it was like there was a zombie apocalypse. For the next 2 days the sun wasn't shining at all, luckily at the last day of the week it had finally shined, everything was growing fine and my family and I were having a fun time playing outside.  I hope the acid rain doesn't come again because it destroyed one of the most beautiful things in the world.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 5 - Activity 2

Hello again, whoo! I am on a role today just finished my dinner and I am full so far this is my 4th post today. Anyways hope you're having great holidays! Enjoy!

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away

DAY 5: Here to StayActivity

2: Changing Climates [4 points]

Over the past decade, the climate in New Zealand (and around the world) has been changing. In fact, the climate has been getting warmer and warmer. While many of us like warm weather, climate change is not good news. Higher temperatures can cause glaciers to melt (leading to flooding) and increase the amount of rain that falls.
Here in New Zealand, we have noticed the change. In fact, we sometimes have torrential (huge) rain storms causing flooding, landslides and road closures. When it starts to rain really hard, Aronui and I usually hide out in our lounge and play games like Yahtzee, Monopoly and Uno. If it rains all day, we will also spend some time reading, watching movies and baking.
What about you? What do you like to do on a rainy day?
On your blog, tell us about five things that you like to do when it is too rainy to go outside.
My favourite things to do on rainy days are:
  • Read Books (All-Day)
  • Cooking/Baking
  • Dance/Playing with my sister
  • Post Things on my blog
  • Hang out with my Family
  • Play Games - Games on Phone and Board Games (Bonus)
Fun Fact: I have learned and posted something about Climate Change and Global Warming. Please go check it out to learn cool things! Link

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 5 - Activity 1

Welcome again to another post-New Year is only a few more days away I hope you guys are ready for school! Enjoy!

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away
DAY 5: Here to Stay

Activity 1: Persistent Pollution [4 points]
In 2016, the World Health Organisation announced that Timaru, a small town in the South Island of New Zealand, had the highest recorded levels of air pollution in New Zealand. Some of this pollution was caused by natural events (eg. fires) but most of it was produced (made) by humans.
Watch this short video on air pollution. It will tell you more about the natural and human causes of pollution.

On your blog, share three new things that you learned about air pollution from this video.

Air Pollution
  • Smog: a type of air pollution that reduces visibility and has serious health effects.
  • Sulfurous Smog: also called London Smog is made out of chemical compounds called sulfur oxides and is caused by the use of sulfur-bearing fossil fuels, particularly coal.
  • Photochemical Smog is a mixture of pollutants that are formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react to sunlight, creating a brown haze above the cities. It tends to occur more often in summer, where we have the most sunlight.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 4 - Activity 3

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away

DAY 4: Like a Scene Out of a Movie

Activity 3: Crazy, Cool Clouds [5 points]
Have you ever looked up into the sky and seen a cloud that had a really cool shape? I certainly have, and so have dozens of other people. Take a look at the three pictures of crazy, cool cloud formations below.

From left to right: Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
Clouds are formed when small drops of water stick together. To learn more about clouds and how they are formed, you can watch this cool video. Once you have learned about clouds, please choose your favourite cloud picture.
On your blog, tell us what you see in the photo. What shape(s) do you see? Be sure to tell us which picture (1, 2 or 3) you have chosen and describe what you see in lots of detail!

Picture 2

Clear skies with only one cloud you can see, one of the most wonderous and strangest clouds ever seen. It somehow looked like a mini tornado. With colours as pale as paper, the rare cloud fits in with the sky. It also looks like a bowl, inside has magnificent treasures that sparkle as bright as the brightest star. As the cloud roams the city, people looked up to be entranced with a big and bright cloud. As the days pass the cloud breaks into pieces, but one day the rare cloud will again form and become the centre of attention.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 4 - Activity 1 - 2

Hey, lovelies welcome to another post, it is almost 2019 and the new year. I am excited to start school again, I am also excited for the new year to start. Well, I hope you enjoy and learn something!

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away

DAY 4: Like a Scene Out of a Movie

Activity 1: The Southern Lights [4 points]
Once in a while, a very special event takes place in New Zealand. It is a show of beautiful, bright lights that appear in the sky over the South Island. The lights are called the ‘Aurora Australis’ or ‘Southern Lights.’ They are similar to the ‘Northern Lights’ that are often seen in places like Northern Canada, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The southern and northern lights are so stunning that they often leave people, who are watching them, speechless.
For this activity, you are to write a short acrostic word poem about the beautiful lights. Hazel has written an acrostic poem about summer to give you an example.
S - Sun outside,
U - Umbrellas in the sand.
M -  My friends and I, having fun,
M - Making sandcastles,
E - Enjoying ice cream on a hot day,
R - Racing to the beach!
On your blog, use the word ‘LIGHTS’ to write an acrostic poem about the Southern Lights. Be as creative as you can!
For more information and examples of acrostic poems, check out this poetry website.
L - Lovely colours,
I - Igniting the sky,
G - Glamorous twinkling,
H - Hypnotic stars,
T - Tantalizing view that can bring you in to,
S - Something traumatizing.
Activity 2: The Seven Sisters [4 points]
In the middle of winter, a very special cluster (group) of stars appear in the sky over New Zealand. This cluster is called the ‘Matariki star cluster.’ It re-appears in the sky each May/June and signals the start of the Māori New Year. Many songs (waiata) and stories have been written about the cluster. One of these is called ‘The Seven Stars of Matariki.’ It was written by a New Zealander named Toni Rolleston-Cummins. She is from Maketu. Click here to listen to Toni read her story.
On your blog, write a short summary of the book. What was it about? Try to summarise the story in 6-8 sentences.

I really liked the story, for me, the story showed me how to trust people, be careful of people you trust and responsibilities. The story was mainly about Mitai, I really liked him since he was cautious in people he trusts. Because in the book he had brothers and when they were hunting they met this beautiful Wahine's (women) and they fell in love with them. But throughout the book the wahine's only used them for food and chores, soon Mitai's brothers were weak and they were very skinny.  One day Mitai's older brother came home early from fishing he noticed that his wife wasn't at home. So his brother had asked the wahine wee she was and she grew with rage. Mitai had grown suspicious and asked advice from Te Rawhara.

Te Rawhara had told Mitai a story and he agreed that the wahine must certainly be Patupaiarehe. The Patupaiarehe use to live on Pukemairi until our people came. He told Mitai to follow where they went, so he did and watched them for hours. He was about to give up but he noticed six Tiwaika sitting next to his brother's whare. Then a seventh fly out of the whare to join the others, Mitai transformed himself into a Kereru and followed the birds to the maunga of Ngongotaha, he perched on a tree. The Tiwaika soon transformed into the wahines and they discussed starving Mitai's brothers to death. Mitai quickly returned to his village and warned his brothers of their wive's terrible plan.

At first, they didn't believe him but when Mitai asked them to look at each other and knew that he was right. They went to Te Rawhara to seek help, so he helped, he gave them a magical net he had woven that can catch the Patupaiarehe. So what they did was they hid and when they came out of the Whare they caught them and sent them to the farthest part of the heavens.

Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 3 l Day 3 - Activity 1 - 2

Hello, lovelies it is almost the end of the year and my 3 year anniversary to blogging! I am super excited for the new year. I am becoming a year 8 and I am just excited, I hope you all are enjoying your holidays because we're going back to school soon.

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away

DAY 3: Taking Flight

Activity 1: Bird of the Year! [4 points]

Aotearoa New Zealand is home to many different kinds (species) of native birds.  Sadly, about a third of our native bird species are at risk of disappearing forever (becoming extinct).

Each year, Forest and Bird New Zealand hold a ‘Bird of the Year’ competition where people can vote for their favourite native bird. This year, the winner was the kererū (or woodpigeon).

Go onto the Bird of the Year website, look through the native birds on the site, and choose one that interests you.

On your blog, write a short description of your bird. Where does your bird normally live? What does your bird normally eat?  Post a picture of the bird underneath your description. Be sure to attribute your picture properly.

Activity 2: Flying Foxes [4 points]
Not only is New Zealand home to many native birds but we also have a number of native bats. Some of these bats are really small while others are much larger. None, however, are as large as the largest bat in Australia. It is called the flying fox (pictured below) and it has a wingspan of up to 6 feet or 2 metres. Wow! That is taller than most of us!
Flying foxes usually sleep during the day and hunt for food at night, using their ears to guide them through the darkness. Like other bats, they have the best hearing of any mammal. It is their ‘superpower.’
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? If I could choose, I would like to be able to fly. It would make it possible for me to fly back to Canada and visit my family whenever I wanted. How amazing would that be?!
On your blog, tell us what superpower you would like to have and why you’d like to have it.
I would like to have the power to heal people, time travel, immortality and magic. I would like the power to heal people, because if someone gets hurt I can easily heal them. I would love to have a the power to time travel so I can find out what happened in the early days of earth. For the last two I would to have them because I can live forever and I could make people come back to life with magic.

How to say 'Hello' in 5 Languages!

Hello and welcome to another post. Today you are gonna to say hello and many other things in 5 languages. Well, shall we get started?

1. Chinese (Simplified)

It is quite hard to pronounce Chinese words because you need the tone you use for each word you say.

2. Spanish

Now, Spanish is a pretty famous language because it is spoken worldwide. Luckily Spanish is easy to learn but the pronunciation.

3. Tagalog/Filipino Language

As some of you may know I speak this language and it is pretty easy you just need to read the letters one by one and figure how many syllables.

4.Japanese

Japanese is actually one of my favourite languages because it is easy to pronounce and learn but it is hard to remember.

5.Korean

Korean is my favourite language, it is a hard language to learn just like Chinese because the spelling is hard to read.

Well, everyone, that is all for this post I hope you learned something. Have a great day!
