Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 - Week 1 - Day 5, Activity 1

Hello and welcome to another post about the Summer Learning Journey. So as you know I am very excited, I hope you guys enjoy and comment if I need to improve.

WEEK 1: A Place to Stand

DAY 5: Blink and You’ll Miss It

Activity 1: Towering Timbers [4 points]

There is a long and rich history of logging in New Zealand. Logging involves cutting down trees. The people who cut them down are called loggers. The trees that they cut down are sold and used to build things (eg. houses), to make products (eg. paper), and to generate (create) heat and power. Over the past two centuries, many of the trees in New Zealand have been cut down by loggers.

Some people like logging because it creates jobs for the loggers and generates money for New Zealand while others are against (opposed to) logging. Many of those opposed are worried that logging will damage the environment. It might also force animals who live in trees (eg. owls) to find new homes.

What do you think about logging?

On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.
I do and don't think that logging should be allowed in New Zealand. So I think we should because more people are coming to New Zealand and because some trees might have diseases. But I also think that we shouldn't do it because it is harmful to the enviroment and if we cut the trees down it would be destroying our world. That's because we need to trees so we can breathe.

  1. Kumusta Lyan,

You've made some really great points, both for and against logging. It is a tough decision to make, isn't it? Especially when you think about all of the jobs logging creates for New Zealanders, and how many uses we have for the wood. On the other hand, you're right; we do need to protect our natural environment. What do you think about planting one native tree for every tree the loggers cut down? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Keep up the great blogging,

    Mikey :)

    1. Hey Mikey, thank you again for your great comment, it really is a tough decision and you make a great point about how many uses we have for the wood. I would actually like to plant one native tree for every tree the logger cut down because we can add more to the trees that we've cut down. I hope you have a great day.
