Ōtautahi | Social Studies

For the last weeks of the term, we have been learning about Canterbury/Ōtautahi, the history, the places and their significance. Our task was to answer some questions and create a presentation about them.

Reflection:
I think I did a very good job in completing my work, although I didn't finish in the time I expected to finish. I think I can do better next time.

The Nuremberg Laws | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for Social Studies we learned about the Nuremberg Laws, the impact of the laws of the Jews and the rights that were affected due to these laws. We needed to do source analysis of a text that has been provided to us, for the source analysis we first had to read our source then we answered questions related to the topics which were discussed in the text.

At their annual party rally held in Nuremberg in September 1935, the Nazi leaders announced new laws based on many of the racial theories common in Nazi beliefs. These "Nuremberg Laws" exclused German Jews from Reich citizenship an dprohibited them from marrying or having sexual relations with person of "German or German-related blood." Addtional regulations to these laws deprived them of most political rights. Jews were disenfranchised (that is, they had no righ to vote) and could not hold public office.

The Nuremberg Laws did not identify a "Jew" as someone with particular religious beliefs. Intead the first amendment to the Nuremberg Laws defined anyone who had three or four Jewish grandparents as a jew, regardless of whether that individual recognized himself of herself as a Jew or belonged to the Jewish religious community. Many Germans who had not practised Judaism (the Jewish refligion) or who had no done so for years found themselves caught in the grip of Nazi terror. even people with Jewish grandparents who had converted to Christianity could be defined as Jews.

The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 was the start of a new wave of anti-Semitic laws that brought about immediate segregation: Jewish patient were no longer admitted to municipal hospitals in Düsseldorf, German court judges could not refer to legal commentaries or opinions written by Jewish authors, Jeiwsh officers were expelled from the army, and Jewish university students were not allowed to sit for doctoral exams.

Other regulations reinforced the message that Jews were outsider in Germany; for example, in Deccember 1935, the Reich Propaganda Ministry issued a decree forbidding Jewish soldiers to be named among the dead in World War I memorials.

Adapted from https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/anti-jewish-legislation-in-prewar-germany

1. Provide two examples of ways in which the Nuremberg laws affected the rights of German Jews.
The Nuremberg Laws didn't allow German Jews to have citizenship.

They also didn't allow them to have any romantic or sexual relationships with people of "German or German-related blood".

2. What other actions were taken that discriminated against Jews in Germany?  (Remembering)
Anyone with three or four Jewish grandparents were defined as a Jew, regardless of whether that person identifies as a Jew.

The Reich Propaganda Ministry issued a decree which forbade Jewish soldiers to be named among the dead in the World War I memorials.

They dpreived then of political rights and they were disenfranchised, which means they weren't allowed the right to vote.

3. Why do you think that the Nazis passed these laws? (Understanding)

Hitler hated the Jews, he thought that the Jews were staining the purity of Germnay saying they were the source of the German's misofrtunes.

4. If a New Zealand government passed a law that provided for different treatment of a named racial group in New Zealand, what do you think the reaction of most New Zealand people would be? Why do you think this might be the case? (Applying)

Many people would be enraged and shcoked at the fact that this may be happening. Since Māori had already experienced many difficulties with their cutlure, there may be various disagreements, and there is a chance of riots and strikes.

5. do you think these Nuremberg laws were racist? Explain your point of view. (Evaluating)

The Nuremberg Laws were racist towards the Jews because they were outcasting a race. After all, every race should be able to be recognized and celebrated. They took away many of the Jews rights which were required to live properly. They were denied many things and were humiliated, the Nuremberg Laws were unfair to them and didn't dive thme the freedom to have say in anything that was said in the government. They also massacred a huge amounts of the population of Jews, even going as far to sending them to concentration camps.

The Great Depression | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for Social Studies, we learned about the Great Depression. Because of the fact that we have started learning about the Holocaust, we started by looking at the Great Depression the cause of it and why it was related to the Holocaust. Our task was to write three paragraphs answering questions on the impact of the Great Depression.

Why was Germany hit the hardest during the depression?

Germany was incapacitated the hardest during the Great Depression of 1929. The Great Depression is a relevant topic that displays the importance of money, banks and the stock pay market. After suffering a grand defeat from the first world war, Germany had to pay off the debt that was assigned t them from the allies due to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany did not have enough money to pay off its debt, making society treat money as if it wasn't worth as much much as a block of butter. banks weren't of much help either; it was very difficult for them as they experienced many downfalls where people would withdraw a hefty amount of money. This just shows how much damage the Great Depression did to Germany.

Explain what Germany had to agree to by signing the Treaty of Versailles?

Germany was forced to acknowledge various amounts of terms by signing the Treaty of Versailles written by the Allies. The Treaty of Versailles was very damaging towards Germany as some of the terms included them losing a lot of money. The Treaty of Versailles which was an agreement written by the Allies included many clauses that the Germans hated the most because it blames Germany for starting the first world war. Germany also had to agree to pay reparation of £6.6 billion which Germany did not have. This caused the fall of Germany's economy and the beginning of the Great Depression.

How was NZ affected by the Depression?

The Great Depression, like Germany, also affected many other countries outside of Europe which caused a huge fall in the economy worldwide. The appearance of the Great Depression did a lot of damage to Germany but also to other countries which created a big mark in the history books. During the Great Depression, many citizens lost their jobs in New Zealand due to the large economic fall. In just three years the national income fell by 40 per cent, which was further weakened by the burden of interest on the overseas debt. This caused the fall of New Zealand's economy which had affected the lifestyles of many citizens.

What did Hitler say about Jews? | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for Social Studies we started learning about the Holocaust. What we did first learn about Hitler's hatred for the Jews by looking at two of his quotes, after that we then had to summarize these quotes.

Quote 1.

"The Jews were responsible for bring negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race which they hate and thus lowering its cultural and political level so that the Jew might dominte."

In this quote, Hitler was writing about how Jews are lowering the standards of Germany and how Jews are planning to overthrow the people of Germany to gain dominance.

Quote 2.

"The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end... spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce... he wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people. The Jew hates the white race and wants to lower its cultural level so that Jews might dominate"

In this quote, Hitler talked about how a Jew was planning to take advantage and take control of a German girl. Hitler again talking about how Jews hate Germans and how they want to dominate.

Personal Rubbish Diary | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we did an activity about collecting rubbish. Last week we were tasked to track how much rubbish we have thrown for three days, it was categorised as rubbish, recycling and organics. After we have collected our data we had to put that data on a hand-drawn bar graph.

What can be done to reduce what goes into your rubbish bin?
Use fewer plastics and throw organics in compost. Instead use reusable lids that can be used again, to cover up leftover food.

Where was the majority of your waste going?
Organics/Recycling or Rubbish?
Most of my waste was rubbish according to the data.

Did you find that one day had more waste than another day? Why was this?
I had thrown away more waste on the first day because we didn't have food cooked for us.

Recycling Bin | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post. Today for social studies we learned about how lazy recycling is affecting the environment and society. After reading an article about it, we needed to answer some questions about it.

What % of rubbish can cause a recycling truck to be dumped?
10% of rubbish in trucks have to dump their contents.

What is going into people's recycling bins?
People are currently putting in non-recyclable content inside yellow bins which harm the environment and creates a problem for the organizations that help with dealing with our everyday waste.

What is the current penalty?
As of May 03, 664 bins has been removed by the city council due to the amount of lazy recycling that has been happening all around the country. Many other residents and citizens have received warnings because of their recycling habits.

Ecotourism | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Today for social studies we learned about ecotourism, how it affects the environment and the benefits of having ecotourism. After learning about it, we had to answer some questions about it to show our learning.

What is ecotourism?
Ecotourism is defined as a way to cater to tourists visiting a natural environment perhaps a coral reserve, without damaging the environment or disturbing animal life.

“responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people and involves interpretation and education” - ecotourism.org

Why is it a growing trend?
There is greater awareness in the world to protect these areas, which means there are more supporters towards this cause. Because that space is being protected more tourists would come to that spot making a better economy for that particular country.

How can tourism help our oceans?

Like the video above represents ecotourism is very helpful for the ocean because we are conserving and protecting the animals that are being threatened by poachers and fishermen. As the video states, the act of ecotourism increases the number of animals being breaded.

Sustainable Fishing | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we learned about sustainable fishing, what it is, the impacts of overfishing/commercial fishing, and what overfishing/commercial fishing is doing to the ocean's food chain. We then had to answer a question about it.

Credit: Iberdrola
How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and birdlife [by-catch]?

Over the years commercial fishing has become a very large industry. It is has provided countries around the world with delicious seafood and profits. But, commercial fishing has also been a huge threat to the ocean, sea animals and food chains around the ocean. Problems such as overfishing and bycatch, which harm the ocean's animal populations and damage many ecosystems within the ocean.

Overfishing is the act of fishing at a relatively quick rate where a species do not have time to develop more, which affects the population of that certain species, creating an underpopulated area. Bycatch is the act of catching a marine species unintentionally while catching other animals such as crabs or tuna.

In a segment of Seaspiracy, it mentioned how dolphins are being bycaught by fisheries who are aiming to catch tuna. Most of the time the dolphin that was caught is thrown back to the ocean, they might even dead by the time they are thrown in.

Birdlife is also decreasing due to the amount of fish being taken out by the ocean, this is because ocean birds feed on the fish that is being chased to the surface by other large predators. So when we overfish areas where birds feed, they won't have any food, they will then starve, after that, they will then die.

Given these points, commercial fishing is a huge threat to many marine sea life and ecosystems around the oceans. This is because of the dangerous fishing techniques done by many fisheries that are either legal or illegal, which can be a threat to the marine life population.

Shark Finning | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we watched a bit of the Netflix Documentary 'Seaspiracy'. In that little bit of the show, we learned about Shark Finning and why it is a problem. After watching and discussing it we needed to answer some questions about it.

Credit: Sharks.org

What is Shark Finning?
Shark finning is the act of cutting off the shark's fins and using it for a traditional Chinese dish called 'Shark fin soup', which is a very popular dish in China. This is a very horrible practice. After cutting off the fins of the shark they would throw the shark back to the sea. This is bad because they wouldn't be able to swim properly and they would still be bleeding.

Why is it a delicacy?
Shark fin soup is a symbol of social standing and aristocracy, so when someone eats shark fin soup it is a symbolism that they have money and that they are rich. The fins of the shark take on a consistency similar to noodles.

Credit: Wikipedia
How is this impacting our ocean?
Sharks are a very important key to the balance of the ocean's food chain and the many eco-systems. If sharks aren't around it will affect other animals in the food chains.

Starfish Poem | Social Studies

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we read a poem about a starfish, after that we then had to analyse the texts so that we could find out what the main message of the text was. We also then had to give evidence to support our opinion of that.

Evidence: These highlighted parts in the poem show how one can change the world, it takes one person. This is very important because it tells us one person can make a difference and inspires us to make a difference. The highlighted bits also show us that our opinion does matter even though it may be a small one.

This also tells us to help the environment because it is only getting worse and it will affect us and many other living things in the world.
THE  STARFISH  POEM
Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking
on the beach
before he began his work.
One day he was walking along
the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human
figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think
of someone who would
dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster
to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw
that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead he was reaching
down to the shore,
picking up something
and very gently throwing it
into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that
there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along with it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely.
Then bent down, picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said-
"It made a difference for that one."

Anti-Vietnam Song ⎢ Music Through Time

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we started a new topic about Woodstock which was similar was connected to the previous topic we did, Beatlemania. Woodstock is a musical festival held in America, the festival went on for 3 days, many people attended this event. The people that attended the event were against the war. Our blogging task for this unit was to do a blog on one of the songs that went against the Vietnam War.

I chose to do the song 'Vietnam' by Jimmy Cliff.

Vietnam

Hey, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam

Yesterday I got a letter from my friend fighting in Vietnam
And this is what he had to say
“Tell all my friends that I’ll be coming home soon
My time’ll be up some time in June
Don’t forget”, he said, “To tell my sweet Mary
Her golden lips are sweet as cherry”

And it came from Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam

It was just the next day, his mother got a telegram
It was addressed from Vietnam
Now Mistress Brown, she lives in the USA
And this is what she wrote and said
“Don’t be alarmed”, she told me the telegram said
“But Mistress Brown your son is dead.”

And it came from Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, hey, Vietnam
Somebody please stop that war now

Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, oh Vietnam
Vietnam, oh Vietnam, oh oh, oh oh
Somebody please stop it

Vietnam, Vietnam, oh Vietnam
Vietnam oh oh, oh oh Vietnam
Hey Vietnam, aha Vietnam, oh oh, yeah
I wanna say now somebody stop that war

The lyrics of the song portrays a soldier writing a diary to his friends and family about his return home. But instead, his family were notified about his son's death. Though the song wasn't as popular as some, it was considered the most effective of the anti-Vietnam songs.

Beatlemania | Music Through Time

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today for social studies we started a new topic. For this topic, we are learning about Beatlemania, what it is and how it impacted the music industry to what it is today. Our first task was to write about one of their songs. I have chosen to write about their song 'Yesterday', written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Yesterday

The song yesterday was a song from the Beatles album called 'Help!'. The song was written by two members of the Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney and was produced by George Martin. The song is about a heartbreak between two lovers.

Lyrics:
Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why she had to go
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hideaway
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Why she had to go
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hideaway
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Discussion
The lyrics are saying how their relationship was yesterday compared to today. These lyrics represent how something that you have said could have made your lover leave you.

During the 1940s music genres such as Jazz were very popular and were always listened too. This is because of the war, it was very gloomy around this time as the world had just concluded yet another war. So when music such as the Beatles came it was very surprising for some people.

Anzac: Significance of WW1⼁Music Through Time

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post today I have finished our last unit for Social Studies. For this unit, we had to learn about the Anzacs, what they are, what they were known for, their experiences, and how music was used during the war. Our objective for this unit was to understand what happened during the Gallipoli Campaign and how music was used during WW1.

Gallipoli Campaign

The Gallipoli Campaign is a campaign that took place from 19 Feb 1915 to 9 Jan 1916. The purpose of the Gallipoli campaign was to make an opening through Dardanelles for Allied Ships to come through and capture the Capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople. Their goal also included completely throwing the Ottoman Empire out of the war. The campaign went on for 8 months, resulting in the Ottoman Empire winning.

The Last Post

When do you hear the Last Post being played?
The Last Post would normally be heard when we are celebrating Anzac Day or Remembrance Day, it is also played in services where we commemorate the people who have participated in the war and honour the people who sacrificed themselves. The last post can also be heard during memorials and for funerals for people that have served their country.

Why is this song significant to New Zealand?
This song is significant to New Zealand because it honours the many soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for our country. It was important because some soldiers did not have a proper burial and some soldiers were never even found.

What does the Last Post represent?
The last post represents the many wars and battles the world has gone through. Before the last post was just a call that signified what time of the day it was for a soldier. But as time passed by it has been incorporated into the ceremonies and military services for the people who have served their country. The last post also symbolises the start of a new life for the soldiers.

Music Through Time: Parihaka

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, this week for social studies we have started a new unit. For this unit, we learned about Parihaka and how it impacted the natives who were living in Parihaka. Our objective for this unit was to understand what happened to Parihaka, its impacts and how songs were used during this event.

Information about Parihaka

Parihaka is a small community between the Tasman Sea and Mt Taranaki. After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the government started to take away lands from the Māori, when their lands were taken away from them they didn't have anywhere to go. Parihaka was a small village that housed many natives that lost their homes during that time.

Song: Parihaka
Artist: Tim Finn & Herbs

My friend, My friend, I hate to see you suffer,
Events conspire to bring us to our knees,
My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,
Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,
Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,
The endless tide is murmuring his name.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,
And even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain.
I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

Te Whiti he used the language of the spirit,
Then stood accused, the madman and his dream,
He saw the train go roaring through the tunnel,
He heard the voice travel on the magic wire,
But he loved the silence of the river,
He watched the dog piss on the cannon's wheel.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,
And even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain.
I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

One day you'll know the truth,
They can't pull out the roots,
Come and take me home,
To weep for my lost brother.
They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki,
His children's children wearing the white plume,
So take me for the sins of these sad islands,
The wave still breaks on the rock of Rouhotu.
And when you taste the salt that's on your pudding,
And when you taste the sugar in your soup,
Think of Te Whiti, he'll never be defeated,
Even at the darkest hour,
His presence will remain,
I'll sing for you the song of Parihaka,
Come to Parihaka,
Weep for my lost brother,
The spirit of nonviolence,
Has come to fill the silence, Come to Parihaka.

Discussion; Questions
The main message of this song was too inform and tell viewers what happened to Parihaka by using a song. They mentioned information about how Parihaka was impacted by the attack and how the natives lived through all the pain they had suffered.

Lyric Observations
"The spirit of nonviolence, Has come to fill the silence, Come to Parihaka." The following line has been written for the purpose of mentioning how Parihaka used peaceful resistance as a strategy to resist soldiers who came to their village.

"They can't pull out the roots, " This is a saying that means the soldiers can't remove them and their culture. The soldiers cannot fully remove the Māori culture and their heritage which can be known as their roots.

The line "Rise up, defend yourself, never give in," is a very good example of how determined they were to resist the soldiers.

Significance
Today, Parihaka is still a very sensitive topic for many natives that are living in New Zealand. Parihaka was a brutal event in NZ history and an example of an important method to peacefully resist the government. This song has opened up more awareness about the event and shows justice to many people who have lost someone important to them.
