Activity 2: Discovering Aotearoa [4 points]
Many people believe that Kupe was the first explorer to discover Aotearoa, New Zealand in about 1300. He navigated his way by waka to Aotearoa from Hawaiki using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques - just like Nainoa Thompson (from Activity 1) did much later on. Legend says that he followed a great octopus all the way to Aotearoa/New Zealand and finally destroyed it in Cook Strait (the water between the North and South Islands).
Many years later, a Dutch explorer from The Netherlands, Abel Tasman, was exploring the Pacific Ocean when he came across New Zealand. He thought that he was the first person to ‘discover’ the country (despite the fact that Māori already lived in New Zealand!) and made the claim in 1642 that he had ‘discovered’ a new land. His exploration of New Zealand inspired many other European explorers to follow his lead and travel to Oceania.
Kupe and Abel Tasman were two different men from two very different backgrounds (cultures) who shared a common interest - exploration.
For this activity, we had to think about our personal experiences and our cultural background. We had to explain where our family comes from. For this, I have created a poster about my cultural background. For this, I have created a poster about where my family and I came from.
I hope you have learned something, please have a great day!
Hi Lyan,
ReplyDeleteLovely poster! Thank you for sharing this, it was lovely to read this morning :)
It's lovely to read about the Philippines, I did not know much about it before reading your poster. It must be very beautiful in the Philippines with all those waterfalls. How many people live in the Philippines?
Next time you could even mention more about where you family is from! I'm sure that it would be very interesting to read about.
Keep up the great blogging work!
Gabe
Hi Gabe!
DeleteI think around 108 million people live in the Philippines, and if you ever get to visit the Philippines the beaches are really popular because they have crystal like water.
Next time I will do my best to make my work more interesting. Please look forward to more posts!
Hi again Lyan
DeleteWonderful! I am really looking forward to when I get a chance to go visit! Do you get to visit the Philippines much?
see ya,
Gabe
Kia Ora Lyan!
ReplyDeleteYour poster is so beautiful, it's great to see that you're using Piktochart to enhance your work. It really brought me to your blogpost when I saw it on the Uru Manuka twitter page. It's really good how you included the information you learned while reading the SLJ website, very useful for the readers that might not be as familiar with the information as others.
It's really cool that your family is from the Philippines, it's a really beautiful place isn't it? Have you ever traveled to the Philippines? The Laguna beaches are beautiful, looks like a nice holiday spot. As Gabe said, I would also really like it if next time you could mention more about where your family is from. I too think that it would make it even more interesting to read.
I can't wait to read more of your blog posts, you have done an amazing job so far! Keep doing what you're doing cause it's amazing. I hope to see more amazing posters and presentations from you. You'll definitely see more comments from me, I hope to see some replies too.
Great job, kia kaha

Hi Nadia!
DeleteThank you for taking your time to look at my post, Philippines is a really beautiful place but over the past years pollution has been a big problem there. I haven't traveled to Philippines in a long time and I am hoping I could go there these holidays.
Thank you for your comment!
Hello again Lyan!
DeleteYes, unfortunately pollution is such a huge issue all around the world. Have you been learning about climate change caused by pollution? How has climate change impacted the Philippines?
It would be very cool to go to the Philippines! I might have to go check it out sometime in the future, the culture looks fascinating!
Thanks for the reply,
I will be checking out your posts soon!
Until next time!
- Nadia :)
