Hi everyone! Welcome to another post! Merry Christmas! Right now is Christmas Eve, it is 12:00 am here in Taiwan. Back in New Zealand, I am pretty sure they passed it 5 hours ago. Anyways here is week 1, day 5 of the Summer Learning Journey.
Activity 2: SWIMMING TO SAFETY
Yusra Mardini is a teenage girl who was born in Syria, a war-torn country in the Middle East. She left Syria in 2015 to get away from the constant fighting and became a refugee. During her journey to reach safety in a new country, the engine on the boat she was travelling in broke down and Yusra, her sister and two other jumped out of the boat and swam to get help. Her heroic actions saved twenty people's lives.
Yusra now lives in Germany. In 2016 she was named as part of the Refugee Olympic Team and her sawm for this team in the last summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is now training for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo Japan.
For this activity, we had to either listen to a podcast of Yusra or read her story on her own website.

Hey Lyan!
ReplyDeleteGreat to read about Yusra Mardini! Did you know that she has a sister who helps refugees in Greece? Amazing!
I love the way that you have laid out this poster! It makes it so easy to read and the blue really goes well as Yusra spends so much time in the water! Do you swim? What sports do you like to play?
Keep up the great blogging work!
