DAY 5: Against the Odds
Activity 1: NATIONAL TREASURE
Sophie Pascoe is a New Zealand para-swimmer. This means she is a competitive swimmer with a physical disability. Very sadly, Sophie was run over by a lawnmower when she was only 2 years old. She had to have the bottom of her left leg amputated. However, despite this terrible accident, she was determined to become a competitive swimmer.
Sophie had won numerous New Zealand and world para-swimming title, including nine Olympic gold medals. She had also won the Halberg Award for Disabled Sportsperson of the Year three times. Sophie is a great example of a New Zealander who did not let her disability stop her from achieving her dream. She is truly a 'National Treasure'. A national treasure is someone or something that is very important to a country.
For this activity, we had to share three things that we treasure and why we treasure them.

The first thing I treasure is my Grandmother clothes. I treasure my grandmother's clothes because it reminds me of her and how amazing she was.
The second thing I treasure is my notebook, this notebook was given to me by my sister on her 7th birthday. I treasure this because it is like my diary and my sister gave it to me.
The third thing I treasure is my sister's teddy bear, it was actually mine but I gave to her because she wanted it. I treasure this because it was given to me by my grandmother who we call 'nanay' in the Philippines.
Kia ora Lyan,

Your grandmother's clothes is such a wonderful thing to treasure. I had my Nana's dressing gown for years and I refused to wash it because it smelt like her. What about the clothes reminds you of her?
That was such a kind thing to do for your sister, giving her your teddy bear. Does she treasure it as much as you do?
Until next time, happy blogging :)
