Summer Learning Journey 2019-2020 • Week 2 • Day 2 - Activity 2

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post, today I will be doing another post for the Summer Learning Journey. Enjoy!

Activity 2: SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE

You may have heard people talking about an issue called 'Climate Change'. Climate Change refers to an increase in the temperature of our planet. Warmer temperatures can cause natural disasters (floods, storms, droughts, bushfires, hurricanes, etc), rising sea levels, and the extinction (disappearance) of plants and animals.

Many people in New Zealand (and overseas) are worried about climate change, including Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old girl from Sweden. She believes that climate change is not only real but that it is a "crisis". She is upset that adults, particularly governments and powerful people, are not taking climate change seriously. In 2018 she began protesting outside the Swedish government buildings every Friday instead of going to school. She inspired the School Strike for Climate protests and, in 2019, spoke to United Nations about her concerns. Not everyone, however, is convinced that climate change is really happening.

For this activity, we had to explore a website called School Strike for Climate Australia, then we had to list three facts that we learned. Along with that, we had to include a photograph of something that we are doing around the home to help the environment.

Three Interesting Facts:

  1. Going to school simply isn't doing anything about Climate Change.
  2. They are students from Australia.
  3. They are striking to tell their politicians to take their futures seriously.

I took a picture of a shower because I am taking less time to shower so I could save some water. My family also takes less time to shower and that really helps us conserve our water.

  1. Hi Lyan,

    Me again. :)

Congratulations on completing another activity. You're doing an amazing getting through them all - well done!

It's awesome to see that you and your family are doing your bit to conserve water and help protect our planet. I think it's so important that we all make an effort to do things like this. Does you school do anything to help minimise the negative environmental impacts?

Have a lovely day, Lyan. I look forward to reading more posts from you soon.

    Until then, happy blogging! :)

    Mikey
