If you did not know the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme. The main reason why it started is to prevent the Summer Slump. The Summer Slump happens when you fall behind in your learning. In my opinion, SLJ is a really great programme to do so that you can keep up with your work.
Activity 2: TRY YOUR OWN TAPA
Fatu Feu'u is a Samoan artist who lives in Aotearoa/New Zealand. His paintings are inspired by tapa cloth (siapo) pattern from Samoa, as well as tatau (tattoo), weaving, carving, mask designs.
Many Pacific Islands have their own versions of tapa cloth. In Tonga, it is called the ngatu, in Fiji - the masi, in Niue - the hiapo, in the Cook Islands - the tapa, and in Hawaii - the kapa. You can learn more about tapa cloth here.
For this activity, we had to create our own tapa cloth design. We could draw our design on paper or using a drawing app. After that, we had to describe what each part of our picture represents.
- I was born in the Philippines and I am now a citizen of New Zealand
Second box - 3 circles
- The first circle with the heart represents my sister. She is always carrying around her teddy around and it has a heart in the middle of its tummy.
- The second circle, left side, volleyball. My mother use to play volleyball when she was young.
- The last circle, the right side represents my father. He is a welder/manufacturer and the spark is meant to represent the welding tools he uses.
Third box - Mountains
- To me, this reminds me of my home. Christchurch. My family and I often go on road trips and we see a lot of mountains.
Fourth box - Interests
- Paper, which includes musical notes and writing.
- Rose, representing the movie 'Beauty and the Beast' - Also representing drawing.
- That weird circle on the side is a camera because I like photography.
Kia ora Lyan,
ReplyDeleteGreat work on completing another Summer Learning Journey activity. There is only one more day left to get those activities done and gain those points so keep blogging and commenting.
What a beautiful Tapa cloth you have created. I love that you have drawn it yourself and included all the things that you love on it. I also love Beauty and the Beast, have you seen the new version of it? Did you like that one or the old cartoon Disney one?
Until next time, happy blogging :)
Emma
Kumusta Emma! I have actually watched the new version 12 times. I enjoyed it so much! I have to say, I enjoyed the cartoon one better because it reminds me of my childhood. Thank you for your lovely comment! Have a great day!.
