Activity 3: Miracle on Hudson
Mr Chesley Sullenberger, or "Sully" as he was known, was an airline captain (pilot) for about 30 years. In 2009 he became world-famous when he landed his aeroplane in the middle of the Hudson River in New York City. He was forced to make an emergency landing when both of the engines in his aeroplane lost power. Amazingly, all 155 people on board the A320 planed survived the landing. This incredible event became known as the 'Miracle on the Hudson.'
You can watch a video about it here.
Although Sully must have been scared when the engines lost power, he didn't show it. Instead, he stayed calm and saved the lives of everyone on board. What a brave man!
For this activity, we have to recount a time when, or someone we know did something brave like Sully.

This is a story about my friend who saved me from my fear, her name is Alliah. So I have a fear of spiders and insects, in my opinion, I just find them terrifying and I feel that they may eat me. So one day in school it was morning tea and we were walking around the school to find a big tree to rest under because of the sun. It was also very hot so we really needed some shade, but when we found one we saw there was a great big spider climbing it. I, of course, was very scared and I could not move so I was stuck in place, I was also about to cry. But luckily Alliah saved me by hitting it with a stick, but it actually made the situation worse as the spider was now on the ground in front of my shoes.
By that time I was now crying but luckily my friend had once again hit it with the stick so then the spider (how I saw) flew away.
It may not seem like it but she really did save me because I was terrified, and it was a really important memory because it made me realize how brave she was.
I hope you like reading my post, hopefully you have learned something new about me. Please have a great day!
Hi Lyan,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing such a personal story, that must have been a really scary experience!
I really liked how you remembered so much of what happened, when you write with detail it allows us readers to really get a picture in our minds about what happened!
How big was the spider? Did you talk to your Friend Alliah after it had gone? It was a good thing that she was there with you!
One way that we can make our stories even more engaging is to include descriptive language. For instance, you could say "...me because I was so terrified that my face was as white as a sheet!" Just something to keep in mind the next time you are writing another amazing story :)
Until next time,
Gabe
Hi Gabe, the spider was about 10cm long and 6cm wide, after the incident we actually laughed and ran off because we thought our reactions were funny. Thank you for your suggestion I will include more descriptive words in my future post. Please have a great day!
