Karate a martial art developed in Okinawa/Ryukyu Kingdom, as a system of self-defence. It developed from the domestic Ryukyuan martial arts called Te 手 and Ti in Okinawan. It is certain that the Okinawan martial art was influenced by Chinese Kenpo/Kempo, the reason they were sure was that Okinawa had frequent contact and exchange with China. I as said it was certain that is because there were no formal contemporary written records, it is not certain when the art called Karate first emerged in Okinawa.

Fast forward to 1868, a young boy was born his name was Gichin Funakoshi or Funakoshi Gichin, he is the main founder/inventor (as told) of Karate. He dedicated his whole life promoting the values of art and established the way of karate-jutsu to Japan, where it spread across the country. By 1949, his colleagues/followers had organised an association for the promotion of Karate, they called it Nihon Karate Kyokai or Japan Karate Association, JKA for short. But that was only the beginning.
