Workshops 2: Linking themes to the impact of Angles, Movement and Shots

Brainstorm: Picture 1
What happened?
  • Other Wybie standing in front of the other mother as she tells him to smile. But instead, he pulls a face.
  • Other Wybie making himself smaller - less of a target - head down, shoulders hunched, looks weak, and vulnerable.
Angles/Shot:
High Angle -  Makes other wybie look overpowered, weak and vulnerable.
POV - Other mother, makes her seem stronger, bigger, dominant.

Viewer - makes the viewer feel sorry/scared for the Other Wybie.
Foreshadowing - hinting at what to come to
Director - Hinting that maybe the other mother is not so wonderful.
Other techniques -  Lighting - spotlight on wybie - like he's on the spot/under focus. - dark around creates a creepy atmosphere.

SEXXXY Paragraph

In the scene with the Other Mother and the Other Wybie, we see high angle shots used to show the theme 'looks can be deceiving' We see this when the Other Mother asks the Other Wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. This makes the audience feel sorry for the Other Wybie because he looks scared. The use of a high angle shot from the perspective of the Other Mother adds to the feeling as it makes the Other Wybie look weak and vulnerable. The director did this to foreshadow the change of the Other Mother from creepy to more creepy.  Coinciding with this is the use of lighting a spotlight is on the other Wybie emphasising that he is under the focus of the Other Mother. This reminds us of earlier in the film where a low angle was used to make Wybie seem bigger and scary but really he was just ordinary. This links to the scene because it also shows a moment when the look of the character was deceiving.

Brainstorm:
What is happening?
  • Coraline is looking for the doll that Wybie gave her, while the doll is peering behind the box watching Coraline.
Angles/Shot:
Dutch tilt - Showing an unusual and mysterious perspective and creating an obscure atmosphere. - Looks as if something is creeping behind Coraline.
POV - Doll, making her seem creepy and scary.

Viewer - Makes the viewer scared that something might happen to Coraline.
Director - Hinting that something bad may happen to Coraline or the doll may not be like a normal doll.
Other Techniques - Lighting - The room is dim creating an enigmatic atmosphere - light focuses on Coraline making her stand out.
