In this scene from Coraline lighting and colour are used to create a cold and distant feeling. This is demonstrated when natural light was showed during Coraline's scene in her room. This makes us understand that Coraline is a very lonely person and her real parents seldom pay attention to her. This was done to highlight that Coraline is alone and that the other world is better than the real world. This worked well with the setting because there weren't many things that decorated her room and it was very gloomy outside. This scene can be compared to a scene later in the movie where Coraline was in the other world with her other parent in the same room. Rather than having a cold and distant feeling, the other one had a more warm and homey feeling.
The other world:
In this scene from Coraline lighting and colour was used to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We see this when artificial light surrounds the room as Coraline her and other parents enter. This shows that the other world is better the real world because Coraline is more welcomed and loved in the other world. The purpose of this scene was to show that the other world was a better place to live in for Coraline. Coinciding with the scene was the camera shot showing the room as Coraline and her other parents enter, it showed off the decorations making it seem like they worked hard to decorate her room. This reminds me of a scene earlier in the film where Coraline was about to sleep in her room in the real world, rather than having an artificial light the other scene had a natural light that creates a cold and distant feeling.
