Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 5 - FINALE

Hey! I am energetic today but also sad due to the Summer Learning Journey, these are the last of the activities I am doing then I have finished the programme. Anyways, let's get started!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 5: The Sky’s the Limit!

Activity 1: Environment Day - Beat Plastic Pollution [4 points]

Every year we celebrate World Environment Day in June. On World Environment Day we do what we can to protect our planet. This year the focus is on reducing the use of plastic bags and water bottles. Watch this Environment Day video to learn more about it!

What could you and your family do to protect the planet?

On your blog tell us three things that you could do to help save the planet.
  1. Stop using Plastic bags.
  2. Reuse plastic bottles
  3. Save Water/Don't Waste Water

Activity 2: Adoption Day [4 points]

Not only can you help the planet by reducing, reusing and recycling, you can also help to save animals and plants by ‘adopting’ them. To ‘adopt’ an animal through the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), you need to visit their adopt a species page, read through the list of animals and choose one.

With the WWF, you don’t actually adopt the animal and bring it home! It’s a symbolic adoption. In this case, you pay a fee ($55.00) and the money is used to provide food and care for your chosen animal. Visit the WWF site and take a look at the animals who are available for adoption. Choose your ‘top three’ animals from the website.

On your blog, list the three animals that you have chosen and then compare and contrast them. How are they similar? How are they different? At the bottom of your post, tell us which of the three animals you would most like to adopt..

  1. Narwhal
  2. Gray Wolf
  3. Snow Leopard
Activity 3: Concluding the Journey [10 points]
Sadly, the Summer Learning Journey has now come to an end. It is time to reflect on everything that you have learned about the environment and, particularly, about how you can protect and preserve it.

On your blog please tell us
1.What is one thing that you learned from participating in the Summer Learning Journey programme this year?
I learnt many things about Earth, and many things about it.

2. What is one thing that surprised you?
That so many animal are endangered and are the brink of being extinct.

3. What is one thing that concerned or upset you?
The animals that are endangered, though it only said one here is another one. That some of the countries in the world either have population in their lakes while others are literally covered in it.

4. What is one thing that you (or your family) can do, moving forward, to help protect our natural environment?
Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. Plastic and used items.

This may be late due to internet problems, Anyways, I am really sad that I finished the Summer Learning Journey, it was a very fun and as great learning experiences. Thank you to all staff in the Summer Learning Journey for making this summer a fun and productive time, Anyways, that is all I hope you are enjoy the rest of your holidays, have a great day and see you soon!

  1. Kumusta Lyan,

Congratulations on completing the Summer Learning Journey (SLJ) programme! You've put a lot of time and effort into your blog over the last few weeks; it has been a joy to read. :)

Isn't it cool how you can 'adopt' wild animals like turtles and lions?! If I were to symbolically adopt an animal I'd choose an elephant - they're my favourite animal. What's your's?
I really like the way your presented your similarities and differences. It makes it very easy to read and understand. Which of the three animals you've chosen would you 'adopt'?

I'm so glad to hear that you've learnt so much from the SLJ programme. We live in such an amazing place and I think it's really important that we're all aware of the impact our actions have on it. It's very sad to think of the number of animals that are endangered and the amount of pollution in our environment but it's promising to know that there are things we can do to help.

Don't be too sad about having finished the programme - you can continue your literacy learning, and earn more points, by leaving positive, thoughtful and helpful comments on other SLJ bloggers' post. You'll receive two points per comment! :)

Congratulations again Lyan. Enjoy the rest of your holiday and I hope to see you blogging with us again next year. :)

All the best for the school year ahead,

    Mikey

  2. Hey Mikey! Thank you for your lovely comments, my favourite animal is a wolf, they are mystical animals that live in packs and everyone has position. I would adopt the Gray Wolf, also the Narwhal, Narwhals are decreasing in their population and I want to help save them.

Next summer, I want to suggest learning the countries around the world and their cultures.

Anyways I would like to thank you again for all your comments, I am very grateful. I hope you enjoy your holidays! All the best for the year ahead!

    1. Mōrena Lyan,

That's a wonderful reason to choose the narwhal. Unfortunately, it sounds like they can use all of the help they can get. Do you know why the number of narwhals is declining?

I'm not sure what the theme for next year's programme will be but I'll pass on your suggestion. :)

      Congratulations again Lyan.

      Blog ya later! :)

      Mikey
