WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve
DAY 4: Making Promises
Activity 2: The Plastic Pledge [4 points]
Over the past few decades, some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items. Yikes!
Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets, for example, have announced that they will stop giving out plastic bags to customers. What do you think of this idea? What do your friends and family think? Is it a good idea or not?
For this activity, please ask one member of your family and/or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free.’
On your blog, tell us what they think about Countdown’s decision to stop using plastic bags.
In my mother's opinion, she thinks that it was a great idea to stop using plastic bags because it would harm the environment. But using the reusable bag makes a great difference and would help the world be a better place. So my Mum goes to Countdown, she says that the bag only costs $1 and the good thing is that if the bag is broken or wears out it could be replaced for free. We use a lot and I mean billions of plastics bags every year it is really amazing they would do that. I do hope that the rest of the supermarkets do that so that there wouldn't be populations and we wouldn't harm the environment.
Hi Lyan, I really like your post about stopping plastic bags in Countdown. That's true that it would make a big difference because you would save more than a thousand plastic bags. I also hope that the other supermarkets like Pak'nSave, New World, Fresh Choice and Four Square stop plastic bags in their store, so it can help stop harming the environment. I hope that you finish all 60 activities of the Summer Learning Journey! Have a cool day!! Bye!!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Lyan,
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a lovely weekend - I'm glad to see that you spent some of your time blogging! :)
I agree with your mum - I think Countdown's decision to stop offering plastic bags is a great choice too. Especially when you think about how much of the world's plastic waste isn't properly recycled (91%!). If we can reduce the amount of plastic we use to begin with, this number should drop dramatically, and using reusable bags is a great start. I didn't realise that Countdown replaces any broken ones - that's so great!
Have you and your family made any other environmentally friendly changes? I started using shampoo and conditioner bars a few months ago - one bar is equivalent to FIVE plastic bottles! I have really long hair, so this one little change has significantly reduced the amount of plastic I use.
Congratulations on completing another activity Lyan - you're so close to finishing the programme! :)
Blog ya later,
Mikey :)
