Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 l Week 4 l Day 3 - Activity 3

Hello, this is the 3rd post of the day and I am actually trying to achieve 5. So anyway try to learn something and enjoy!

WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve

DAY 3: TAKING ACTION

Activity 3: The Power of Ten [10 points]
Sir David Attenborough is a famous TV presenter from England who loves nature and the natural world. He has spent his career filming documentaries about the planet and working hard to protect it. In a recent interview, Sir David was asked to reflect on all that he had learned and to imagine that he had suddenly been given the power to save 10 animals and/or plants from extinction (disappearing forever).
After thinking about the question, he listed these 10 species (animals/plants):

1. Black Lion Tamarin (pictured to the right)

Let’s imagine that you had the same power and that you could save 10 species (animals or plants) from extinction. Who would you save? If I had the choice I would probably save animals like the elephant, white tiger and rhinoceros because they are unique and have lived for centuries on earth. I would also like to save some of my favourite flowers including hydrangeas and calla lily flowers. What about you?

Left to right: White tiger, Hydrangeas, Calla Lily
On your blog, list 10 species (animals or plants) that you would protect from extinction. For each one, give a reason as to why you think it is important to protect.

  1. Rafflesia Flower/Rafflesia Arnoldii  - One of the rarest flowers, with only 20 Rafflesia species in the world. The Rafflesia Flower is critically endangered.
  2. Saola - Saolas is critically endangered and the population is decreasing, though the population is unknown.
  3. Tigers - They are being hunted down for their distinctive fur, there are only 3,890 tigers in the world.
  4. Amur Leopard - They are critically endangered making them the most endangered cats. There are more than 84 individuals left.
  5. Javan Rhino - Javan Rhino's are critically endangered and there are only 50-68 Javan Rhinos left.
  6. Red Wolf - The Red Wolf is critically endangered, there are now only 25 - 40 species left in the world.
  7. Vaquita - Vaquita is the worlds most rare marine mammal. Vaquita is in the brink of extinction, there are only 30 individuals left.
  8. Asian Elephant - It may be endangered but it isn't critical, there are only less than 50,000 Asian Elephants left.
  9. Sumatran Rhino - Sumatran Rhinos are critically endangered, there are only 80 Sumatran Rhinos in the world.
  10. Sea turtle - Sea Turtles are critically endangered due to human activities and we need to save them. There are only 7 species of Sea Turtles left.  Though we don't know how many are still left.

  1. Kumusta Lyna!

How lovely to start my working day off with another post from you. :)

Wow, isn't it sad to see how many animals are endangered? And to think that we (humans) play such a big part in that.

You've chosen some wonderful animals Lyan, and given great reasons for why you would save them. I actually had to Google what a saola and a vaquita were - I'd never heard of them before. How did you find out about them?
Sea turtles would be on my list too. I watched a documentary about them not long ago. I can't remember what country it was filmed in but it was about cities being built so close to the beach that, once baby turtles hatch in the sand, they become so confused by all of the lights from the nearby buildings and cars that, instead of following the moonlight to the water, they go towards the city and are often run over by passing traffic. It was really very sad. A big eye-opener as well. I think it might have been one of the Blue Planet episodes. Have you seen any of them? I definitely recommend watching them, if you haven't. And Planet Earth too.

Congratulations on completing another activity Lyan - he whetu koe! (you're a star!)

    Blog ya later!

    Mikey :)

  2. Hey Mikey! Thank for your lovely comment, to say I am truly sad to see many animals endangered and someday I hope they will all be saved. I found the Vaquita when I was looking for some rare marine animals for my marine biology activities and for Soala I found randomly on the internet. Anyways thank you again for your amazing comments! Please have a wonderful day!
