WEEK 4: Protect and Preserve
DAY 2: Protecting Our Own
Activity 3: A House is Not a Home [10 points]
New Zealand is home to some unique wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. While we work very hard to protect our natural habitats so, too, do people living and working in other countries. One of the oldest international wildlife conservation organisations is called ‘Fauna & Flora International’ (FFI). They support a number of projects around the world, including those working to protect Lansana trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, and national reserves in Mozambique. Read about each of these projects and choose the one that interests you the most.
On your blog, tell us which project you find most interesting and why...
I choose 'Protecting Cambodia's Coastal and Marine environments', I chose it because when I want to be a Marine Biologist when I grow up but I also want to protect many unique species of plants and animals. I also learned many things about Cambodia's coastal and marine environments. Here are some cool facts:
- FFI has been working on marine conservation in Cambodia since 2010.
- Koh Sdach Archipelago has been protected by the FFI and is still protecting till now. This site boasts impressive coral reefs and has been identified as a national hotspot for sea turtles, but it is suffering from the effects of overfishing and illegal fishing.
- A seahorse hotspot has been identified around a small island in Koh Sdach Archipelago wit no fewer than six different species of seahorse. However, these charismatic animals are increasingly being targeted for use in traditional Asian medicine trade.
Kumusta Lyan,
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful that the FFI are trying to protect and preserve marine life in Cambodia? I was there a few years ago and the water was so beautiful and clear - it would be a real shame for that to change and the marine animals to be lost. Have you been to Cambodia before?
It's great that you know what you want to do when you grow up. Being a marine biologist would be incredibly interesting. What is it about it that makes you want to be one?
Kia ora Mikey, thank you again for your amazing comment, I haven't been to Cambodia before but I have tried their food and it is delicious especially the noodles. I want to be a Marine Biologist when I grow up because I wasn't to protect the endangered animals so the we could protect the different kinds of animals. Anyways thank you again for your amazing comments, have a great night!
DeleteKumusta Lyan!
DeleteThe food is delicious, isn't it? If you ever get the chance to go, I can't recommend it enough. It's such a beautiful country, with so much to do and see. The Temples of Angkor Wat are particularly stunning, especially at sunrise.
That's a wonderful reason to want to be a marine biologist. Our planet needs more people like you, who care about endangered animals and want to help them. :)
Kia pai to rā Lyan (have a good day).
Mikey :)
